Bob Steele as Billy the Kid
Veteran cowboy star Bob Steele played a fictionalized Billy the Kid in six low budget westerns for Producers Releasing Corporation in the 1940-41 season. The real life William Bonney had been a homocidal outlaw-gunfighter who was killed at age 21. His cinema adventures had previously been whitewashed to be played by Johnny Mack Brown, Roy Rogers and Robert Taylor. Steele's youthful athletic hero image made him perfect for the part, but he left the series to join the western trio of the Three Mesquiteers at Republic in 1941. The role was assumed by serial hero Buster Crabbe who played the part until 1946. Former Sennett comedian Al Fuzzy St John provided slapstick comedy as saddle partner for both Steele and Crabbe.
